Imagine my surprise, recently when a retired pastor of 40 years sharply corrected me for making some interesting observations when preaching about the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, and he used a Scripture, 1 Ti 1.4 "not to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies.. "
I then took the time to quietly ask him. "Did I say something heretical" he answered "No".
He just would not accept it when I suggested that this Scripture was referring to the false teachings of Gnosticism and was in no way speaking of honest enquiry into Scripture.
Let me ask, how can a preacher of 40 years, who labored well in the gospel, not know and understand about something that possibly half the books of the New Testament refer to?
We have a problem here, how can a congregation understand these things either and be able to interpret their Bible if the Pastor does not?
An additional Curious Fact -
The Apostles Creed is not actually linked to the Apostles.
It is so sad to see so many Pastors preaching messages that are shallow and light weight, so that the congregation barely grow in real Bible understanding.
Again and again we hear ‘moral essays’ and ‘warming affirmations’, because, supposedly, if we truly 'love' others, this is what we will do.
The consequence - if God's people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), that's just too bad, the most important thing seems to be that we are ‘nice’ to each other.
Think about it, the more 'relevant' we christians become, to the world, the less relevant we are in truth, to the world. :-(
