You would think that with 40 years experience, this pastor would have had some understanding of what Paul was referring to in this letter and the problem of Gnosticism.
It is important for Pastors to know these things, and to teach their congregation in order that they might understand and interpret their Bible reasonably.

Scholastics. Between 1050 - 1350 AD a philosophical defence of theology (which was not particularly based on the Bible but was an attempt to weave Greek philosophy with Roman Theology) was prominent.
It is so sad to see so many Pastors preaching messages that are shallow and light weight, so that the congregation barely grow in real Bible understanding.
We continually hear pastors preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations' because supposedly, if we truly love each other, this is what we must do.
Well, who cares if God's people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), what's really important, is if we are very positive and ‘nice’ to everybody.
Ohhhh, the more 'relevant' we christians become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in actuality, to the world. :-(
