With respect, I asked him if I was teaching heresy at all, to which he answered. "No".
I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
Of the New Testament books, around half of them refer to Gnosticism, how could he not understand this - someone who had minister to 40 years?
Where does this leave a congregation, how can they possibly understand about these things if the Pastor does not know?

Church history is the story of how God worked in the earth using imperfect and normal people (the unspiritual as well), like us.
Tragically, a large proportion of Pastors preach light weight messages that are so very shallow that the congregation hardly grow in the Bible and interpretation skills.
Continually we hear ‘moral essays’ and ‘warming affirmations’ supposedly, this is what we will do, if we truly 'love' one another.
Where is our focus? It seems that it's just too bad if God's people are falling through the cracks, ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), after all He wants us to be ‘nice’ to everybody.
Hmmm, the more 'relevant' christians become, to the world, the less relevant christians are truly, to the world. :o
