I was taken aback recently when an old retired pastor, rebuked me with this Scripture - 1Ti 1:4 "nor to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies.. " this was after I had been preaching on the death burial and resurrection of Jesus and made some interesting points.
He was to answer "No" when I asked him if I had said anything of a heretical nature.
"There is a place for exploring Scripture in an honest way, and this Scripture is referring to you, the false teaching of Gnosticism not simple exploration." I said to him quietly, but it would not accept it.
Gnosticism had been so influential in the new Testament times and the new Testament writings, how could a pastor of 40 years experience not know this.
We have a problem here, how can a congregation understand these things either and be able to interpret their Bible if the Pastor does not?

Diodorus of Tarsus he later became bishop of Tarsus (died 393 AD). He used the literal/historical method of interpretation and wrote a treatise on the principles of Biblical interpretation, instilling them in his pupils, including John Chrysostom.
It is so sad to see so many Pastors preaching messages that are shallow and light weight, so that the congregation barely grow in real Bible understanding.
Pastors love to preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations', because if we truly 'love' others, this is what we will do.
It seems that the most important thing is, that we are very positive and ‘nice’ to everybody. It's just too bad, if God's people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle).
Soooo, the more 'relevant' we become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in reality, to the world. :-o
