I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
Let me ask, how can a preacher of 40 years, who labored well in the gospel, not know and understand about something that possibly half the books of the New Testament refer to?
Where does this leave a congregation, how can they possibly understand about these things if the Pastor does not know?

Unfortunately, a very large number of preachers in our churches continue preaching shallow, light weight messages and their congregations barely grow in Bible knowledge.
Preachers continually preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations', because this is what we'll do, if we truly 'love' each other, supposedly.
It seems that, so long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to all, it really doesn't matter if Christians are falling through the cracks for a lack of knowledge.
Think about it, the more 'relevant' we all become, to the world, the less relevant christians are in point of fact, to the world. :(
