I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
This was a pastor who had laboured in the gospel of 40 years and yet he did not understand about Gnosticism and the problems that Paul spoke of in this passage.
A congregation is not going to have much hope of understanding these things if the Pastor does not.

There really are so many Pastors these days who preach shallow messages which are lightweight and their congregation simply do not develop Bible interpretation skills.
