Respectfully I asked him if there was anything in what I was teaching that was heretical in any way. He said, "No".
I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
Of the New Testament books, around half of them refer to Gnosticism, how could he not understand this - someone who had minister to 40 years?
A congregation is not going to have much hope of understanding these things if the Pastor does not.

This is not an onerous task, all it takes is time to zealously study and prayer.
