After preaching about the death, burial and the resurrection of Jesus, I received a caning with a Scripture 1 Timothy 1:4 "nor to be taken up with fables and endless genealogies.. " from an old retired pastor. I had simply made them interesting observations.
He answered "No", when I asked him if I had said anything that was heretical.
I explained that Gnosticism and its false philosophy was the target of that Scripture and not simple enquiry into the Bible, but he would not accept that.
This pastor had worked in the Ministry for 40 years and I wondered how he could possibly in all that time, not learn about something that was so influential in the new Testament period?
A congregation is not going to have much hope of understanding these things if the Pastor does not.
An added Interesting Fact -
The Jewish form of our Old Testament was assembled in 3 books - The Torah - (the Law), Haphtaroth - (the Prophets - Prophetical lessons) and Megiloth - (the Writings - rolls, writings. books brief enough to be read publicly at an annual festival.)
It is so sad to see so many Pastors preaching messages that are shallow and light weight, so that the congregation barely grow in real Bible understanding.
Preachers love to give to us ‘moral essays’ and ‘warming affirmations’ because, supposedly, if we truly 'love' others this is what we will do.
The consequence - if God's people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), that's just too bad, the most important thing seems to be that we are ‘nice’ to each other.
These things considered, the more 'relevant' christians become, to the world, the less relevant christians are in reality, to the world. :(

So many pastors lock themselves into the rut of ‘feel good’ messages and favorite topics.

After preaching portions from here and from there, through the Bible we need then to put it all together in a clear, understandable way for our congregation.
A Liberal and Neo-orthodox influence come in many forms as we see from the many new books and ideas flooding the church.
Think about it, teach the basics of Bible history, and Church history, and we would not be so ready to repeat that history.
It's our job as preachers to sew together, the parts of God's plan and His Word into a seamless tapestry that the Church can draw on for the remainder of their lives, helping them to understand the Bible, the Church and God’s Eternal Plan.
With prayer, study and fervor this is not a hard thing to achieve.
