I was taken aback recently when an old retired pastor, rebuked me with this Scripture - 1 Timothy 1:4 "nor to be taken up with fables and endless genealogies.. " this was after I had been preaching on the death burial and resurrection of Jesus and made some interesting points.
"Was there anything heretical at all in what I said "I asked him with respect, his answer was "No".
"There is a place for exploring Scripture in an honest way, and this Scripture is referring to you, the false teaching of Gnosticism not simple exploration." I said to him quietly, but it would not accept it.
This pastor had worked in the Ministry for 40 years and I wondered how he could possibly in all that time, not learn about something that was so influential in the new Testament period?
If a congregation is going to interpret their Bible well at all, they need to be taught these things by their Pastor.

If the many pastors persist in preaching, lightweight and shallow messages to the congregation, the results will always be a people who do not understand their Bible very well.
Preachers love to give to us ‘moral essays’ and ‘warming affirmations’ because, supposedly, if we truly 'love' others this is what we will do.
It seems that, so long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to all, it really doesn't matter if Christians are falling through the cracks for a lack of knowledge.
So then, the more 'relevant' we all become, to the world, the less relevant we are in fact, to the world. :o

This is really not a hard thing to do and it's not even boring if we are prepared to put in some decent time studying with prayer.
