It was a little disconcerting recently when I was sharply corrected by an old retired pastor. I had been preaching on the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, and I made some interesting observations, and he quoted this Scripture 1 Tim 1:4 "..don't waste time on silly stories and never-ending lists of ansectors.. "
I then took the time to quietly ask him. "Did I say something heretical" he answered "No".
I then quietly asserted that that Scripture was referring to the false teachings of Gnosticism and not of honest enquiry of Scripture, but it would not accept.
Of the New Testament books, around half of them refer to Gnosticism, how could he not understand this - someone who had minister to 40 years?
We have a problem here, how can a congregation understand these things either and be able to interpret their Bible if the Pastor does not?

Sadducees - literalists, held to Torah but rejected oral law. They favoured Greek customs and were rationalistic. The priesthood were generally the rich Sadduceans.
It is so sad to see so many Pastors preaching messages that are shallow and light weight, so that the congregation barely grow in real Bible understanding.
Pastors will again and again preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations' because supposedly if we truly love each other, this is what we will do.
The consequence - if God's people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), that's just too bad, the most important thing seems to be that we are ‘nice’ to each other.
Hmmm, the more 'relevant' we all become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in fact, to the world. :<
