Recently I was preaching on the death and resurrection of Jesus, and a retired pastor - a strong preacher of the gospel, and he had been for 40 years, came up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he referred to 1Tim 1:4 "..don't waste time on fables and endless genealogies.."
He was to answer "No" when I asked him if I had said anything of a heretical nature.
I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
Possibly half the books of the new Testament refer to Gnosticism, how can a pastor with 40 years experience not understand this?
In order for a congregation to rightly divide the Word, they need to be taught all these sorts of things.
One more Curious Fact -
270 AD. Athanasius introduced monasticism in the West. Ambrose, Jerome and Augustine did much to promote it. They became very numerous, and there arose many orders of monks and nuns.
It is unfortunate that so many Pastors in our churches will preach shallow and light weight messages, and the result is that their people will hardly grow in and Scripture and interpretation.
Preachers love to give to us ‘moral essays’ and ‘warming affirmations’ because, supposedly, if we truly 'love' others this is what we will do.
Apparently, it doesn't really matter if God's people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), as long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to everybody.
Think about this, the more 'relevant' christians become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in reality, to the world. :-(
