Recently I was preaching on the death and resurrection of Jesus, and a retired pastor - a strong preacher of the gospel, and he had been for 40 years, came up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he referred to 1Tim 1:4 "..don't waste time on fables and endless genealogies.."
He listened as I asked, if I had said anything that was of heresy, and he said. "No".
He just would not accept it when I suggested that this Scripture was referring to the false teachings of Gnosticism and was in no way speaking of honest enquiry into Scripture.
Gnosticism had been so influential in the new Testament times and the new Testament writings, how could a pastor of 40 years experience not know this.
If a congregation is going to interpret their Bible well at all, they need to be taught these things by their Pastor.

If the many pastors persist in preaching, lightweight and shallow messages to the congregation, the results will always be a people who do not understand their Bible very well.
As Pastors, we have taught again and again these 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations' , for supposedly, this is what we will do if we truly love each other.
So, as long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to everybody it is just too bad, if Christians are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle).
I see, ok, the more 'relevant' we christians become, to the world, the less relevant we are if truth be told, to the world. :-(
