A very active retired pastor of 40 years gave me quite a caning with this Scripture 1Tim 1:4 "..don't waste time on fables and endless genealogies..", after I had been preaching about the death burial and resurrection of Jesus had simply made some interesting observations.
He was to answer "No" when I asked him if I had said anything of a heretical nature.
He just would not accept it when I suggested that this Scripture was referring to the false teachings of Gnosticism and was in no way speaking of honest enquiry into Scripture.
Possibly half the books of the new Testament refer to Gnosticism, how can a pastor with 40 years experience not understand this?
Where does this leave a congregation, how can they possibly understand about these things if the Pastor does not know?

1516 AD Desiderius Erasmus' Greek text (1466-1536) A Dutchman who studied with the Brethren of Common Life and at various Universities who never became Protestant but did a lot of work for the Reformation by his writings.
It is so sad to see so many Pastors preaching messages that are shallow and light weight, so that the congregation barely grow in real Bible understanding.
Pastors preach again and again 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations', for this is what good Christians do, if they truly 'love' each other.
It seems that, so long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to all, it really doesn't matter if Christians are falling through the cracks for a lack of knowledge.
Soooo, the more 'relevant' we all become, to the world, the less relevant christians are in actuality, to the world. :<
