It was a little disconcerting recently when I was sharply corrected by an old retired pastor. I had been preaching on the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, and I made some interesting observations, and he quoted this Scripture 1 Timothy 1:4 "nor to be taken up with fables and endless genealogies.. "
He answered "No", when I asked him if I had said anything that was heretical.
He would in no way accept it when I explained that this Scripture referred to the false teachings of Gnosticism and not of fair enquiry into Scripture.
This pastor had worked in the Ministry for 40 years and I wondered how he could possibly in all that time, not learn about something that was so influential in the new Testament period?
It is important for Pastors to know these things, and to teach their congregation in order that they might understand and interpret their Bible reasonably.
