This was a pastor who had laboured in the gospel of 40 years and yet he did not understand about Gnosticism and the problems that Paul spoke of in this passage.
Pastors need to know these things so they can accurately teach a congregation.

Essenes - religious conservatives, withdrew into isolated communities. Did much in Scripture copying etc.. The Dead Sea scrolls are believe to have been part of an Essene Community.
So many Pastors these days continue preaching lightweight and shallow messages, and the congregation simply cannot grow in Bible understanding and interpretation skills.
Preachers love to give to us ‘moral essays’ and ‘warming affirmations’ because, supposedly, if we truly 'love' others this is what we will do.
Well it's just too bad if Christians are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle) as long as we are very positive and ‘nice’ to everybody.
Ohhhh, the more 'relevant' christians become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in truth, to the world. :-o
