Recently I was preaching on the death and resurrection of Jesus, and a retired pastor - a strong preacher of the gospel, and he had been for 40 years, came up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he referred to 1 Ti 1.4 "not to occupy themselves with myths and endless genealogies.. "
I quietly and respectfully asked him if I had said anything that was heretical or inappropriate to which he answered. "No".
I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
This was a pastor who had laboured in the gospel of 40 years and yet he did not understand about Gnosticism and the problems that Paul spoke of in this passage.
A Pastor needs to take the time to learn these kinds of things and teach the congregation so that the congregation can understand and interpret their Bible well.
One more Thought-provoking Fact -
When all 12 Apostles were not only prepared to be a martyr but all but one was, it is a tangible proof of the existence of Jesus Christ and His work and ministry - so many would not suffer and die for a dead fake.
Tragically, a large proportion of Pastors preach light weight messages that are so very shallow that the congregation hardly grow in the Bible and interpretation skills.
Pastors will again and again preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations' because supposedly if we truly love each other, this is what we will do.
So, as long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to everybody it is just too bad, if Christians are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle).
Thinking about it, the more 'relevant' we all become, to the world, the less relevant we all are in actuality, to the world. :<
