It was a little disconcerting recently when I was sharply corrected by an old retired pastor. I had been preaching on the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, and I made some interesting observations, and he quoted this Scripture 1 Ti 1.4 "..don't waste your time on myths and endless lists of ansectors.. "
I then took the time to quietly ask him. "Did I say something heretical" he answered "No".
I continued on to explain that that particular Scripture was not referring to exploring Bible but to the false teachings and philosophy of Gnosticism, but he would not have it.
Let me ask, how can a preacher of 40 years, who labored well in the gospel, not know and understand about something that possibly half the books of the New Testament refer to?
If a congregation is going to interpret their Bible well at all, they need to be taught these things by their Pastor.
