I was taken aback recently when an old retired pastor, rebuked me with this Scripture - 1Tim 1:4 "..don't waste time on fables and endless genealogies.." this was after I had been preaching on the death burial and resurrection of Jesus and made some interesting points.
I then took the time to quietly ask him. "Did I say something heretical" he answered "No".
I explained that Gnosticism and its false philosophy was the target of that Scripture and not simple enquiry into the Bible, but he would not accept that.
This pastor had worked in the Ministry for 40 years and I wondered how he could possibly in all that time, not learn about something that was so influential in the new Testament period?
A Pastor needs to take the time to learn these kinds of things and teach the congregation so that the congregation can understand and interpret their Bible well.

Well it's just too bad if Christians are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle) as long as we are very positive and ‘nice’ to everybody.
I see, ok, the more 'relevant' we become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in truth, to the world. :(
