Imagine my surprise, recently when a retired pastor of 40 years sharply corrected me for making some interesting observations when preaching about the death burial and resurrection of Jesus, and he used a Scripture, 1Tim 1:4 "..don't waste time on fables and endless genealogies.."
I then took the time to quietly ask him. "Did I say something heretical" he answered "No".
He would in no way accept it when I explained that this Scripture referred to the false teachings of Gnosticism and not of fair enquiry into Scripture.
With so many books of New Testament referring to this false philosophy, how can a pastor not understand this?
If a congregation is going to interpret their Bible well at all, they need to be taught these things by their Pastor.

Scholastics. Between 1050 - 1350 AD a philosophical defence of theology (which was not particularly based on the Bible but was an attempt to weave Greek philosophy with Roman Theology) was prominent.
Unfortunately, a very large number of preachers in our churches continue preaching shallow, light weight messages and their congregations barely grow in Bible knowledge.
Pastors love to preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations', because if we truly 'love' others, this is what we will do.
It seems that, so long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to all, it really doesn't matter if Christians are falling through the cracks for a lack of knowledge.
I see, ok, the more 'relevant' we christians become, to the world, the less relevant we christians are in actuality, to the world. :(
