Recently I was preaching on the death and resurrection of Jesus, and a retired pastor - a strong preacher of the gospel, and he had been for 40 years, came up and reproved me smartly over some interesting points I made and he referred to 1 Timothy 1:4 "nor to occupy themselves with false notions and never ending genealogies.. "
With respect, I asked him if I was teaching heresy at all, to which he answered. "No".
I tried to reason with him in respectful way that this Scripture was referring to Gnosticism and its false philosophy, it should not be read that genuine enquiry into Scripture is wrong. He looked unsure, but would not accept it.
You would think that with 40 years experience, this pastor would have had some understanding of what Paul was referring to in this letter and the problem of Gnosticism.
Pastors need to know these things so they can accurately teach a congregation.

Diodorus of Tarsus he later became bishop of Tarsus (died 393 AD). He used the literal/historical method of interpretation and wrote a treatise on the principles of Biblical interpretation, instilling them in his pupils, including John Chrysostom.
Unfortunately, so many Pastors are persistent in preaching lightweight and shallow messages, and the congregation does not grow in Bible understanding and interpretation.
Pastors will again and again preach 'moral essays' and 'warming affirmations' because supposedly if we truly love each other, this is what we will do.
Too bad, if God’s people are falling through the cracks ‘for a lack of knowledge’ (oracle), as long as we are positive and ‘nice’ to everyone.
Think about this, the more 'relevant' we all become, to the world, the less relevant christians are in point of fact, to the world. :o

This is really not a hard thing to do and it's not even boring if we are prepared to put in some decent time studying with prayer.
